Project goal
The project aims to develop a cloud-based LiDAR hosting solution integrated with Silvacom’s Forest Management System (FMS) to make this data more accessible for forestry professionals in Ontario. Capitalizing on the new Cloud Optimized Point Cloud (COPC) format, we seek to streamline large point cloud data, traditionally encumbered by extensive downloading and specialized software. The solution will allow users to select a specific area and conveniently view and manipulate 3D point cloud data via a web browser. We also intend to use the open-source Potree library for the visualization aspect. Different data hosting scenarios, from full cloud hosting to on-premises solutions, will be explored, considering various scales of data requirements.
By overcoming barriers imposed by the lack of support for compressed LiDAR formats by platforms like ArcGIS, our project will bring efficiency to the data usage, potentially revolutionizing decision-making processes in forest management. The ultimate objective is to make the voluminous LiDAR data easily accessible and navigable, leveraging connectivity improvements like Starlink to provide a user-friendly interface for viewing and rendering LiDAR data.
