Project goal
This project aims to determine the feasibility of biocarbon injection within integrated steelmaking and design a pilot injection system suitable for industrial trials. Biocarbon requirements to meet the demands of industrial application will also be developed along with identification of potential biomass sources and associated logistics for industrial scale supply.
MS#1 & MS#2 Update
A short list of possible biocarbon supply options have been developed based on supplier location, ability to meet required trial volumes and ability to meet targeted product specifications. Work also began on equipment design for the industrial trial, notably on establishing the design requirements for the injection lance and material handling requirements for the delivered biocarbon.
MS#3 & MS#4 Update
This phase of the project focused on finalizing biomass supply options for both the Phase 1 and potential Phase 2 based on responses received from various industry partners. The design basis for both the trial injection on a single tuyere as well as that for the longer-term industrial scale system was established. A site visit to review the location, identify access and material storage, utility supplies and appropriate tie ins for both the trial and long-term solutions was completed. Work also continued on the conceptual engineering for both the trial system and industrial scale system to be included as part of the final deliverable.

Throughout the process CRIBE has been a valuable resource, providing insight as well as data and commentary on the findings of the report. In addition, the ability to participate in CRIBE events also contributed to establishing the contacts needed to provide input and data for the report as well as aid in the parallel projects conducted by Stelco outside of this specific project.
